- some studios will be open during EAST

The art show and silent auction is 10am to 7pm, Saturday, November 14th and Sunday, November 15th at MarketPlace Austin Westgate (6800 Westgate/at the intersection of Westgate Blvd and William Cannon).

Show details:
• South Austin Artists Co-op and invited artists will show their work from 10:00am to 7pm
• Live music on Saturday and Sunday afternoons
• Free admission (with suggested donation) for the public
• Kids can play at Locomotion’s huge indoor playroom, enjoy face-painting, ride the indoor train
• Food and door prizes offered by Marketplace Austin Westgate vendors from noon - 6pm on Saturday & Sunday.

Recently founded, the South Austin Artist Co-op, is working to establish a cooperative artist space that provides a safe and agreeable environment for artists to create and show their work, offer classes, and host art exhibits. Any donations and a portion of the silent auction proceeds will be used for the construction of a gallery space and classroom at MarketPlace Austin Westgate.

Support local artists and enjoy art and fun at the new indoor market in south Austin, the MarketPlace Austin Westgate.

It's a contest called Reflections that gets kids interested in the arts. They're working on entries in music, dance, visual arts (painting, drawing), photography and literature.

If you're a local artist who would like to be a judge for the contest, please let me know. It'd just involve an hour or so of your time to judge the entries for my school between Nov. 20 and Nov 30, and then judging the top entries from all the local schools to choose the top 20 percent to go onto the state competition sometime after Nov. 30.

If you'd like, I can post an article about you on our site, www.clayton-reflections.com, with a link to your site or include some pics of your artwork. I'd also be happy to recognize you at both awards ceremonies if you'd like to come. We can set up a table or display area if you'd like to show your work in the foyer as parents come in to the show. There are almost 1000 kids at my school, and last year we had over 300 entries, so we make a very big deal of this, with trophies, medals and red carpet. Then the all-of-Austin-ISD awards ceremony will have the cream of the crop of Austin's young talented artists and their parents. I'd love for the children to be inspired by meeting real local artists and seeing their work. This year's theme is "Beauty is ..." so the kids will be interpreting what beauty means to them. Should be interesting! Please let me know if you're interested in judging in any category.

What is a writer's circle? Based on the highly successful Pender Island model, it's a small and intimate regular gathering of writers eager to receive undiluted and plainly (but kindly!) spoken critiques of their ongoing works, as well as encouragement from others embarking on the similar paths It's sharing techniques, establishing timetables, reading works to small audiences, doing group writing exercises. At this time, the circle is specific to the art of writing.

A few rules: Drugs & Alcohol not welcome at the circle; smoking ok, but outside; NOT a place to tear down others; but DO speak your honest feelings and be prepared to have others do the same. You don't have to have ever been published, or even call yourself a 'writer' - you just have to have a desire to write for others, and have some written material to bring and share.

This circle would be free, but donations to offset coffee, tea, and bottled water would be welcome. Capacity will necessarily be limited; please be somewhat descriptive in your responses (as opposed to "Hi. I'm a writer interested in your circle. Where is it?" - since I'd be pretty wary about those kind of responses.)

About me: I've been writing off and on for five years, I'm participating in NaNoWriMo, and I've several articles published. I'm on the path to do more, and looking for others who are too.

First, a little background. We’re the team behind Phenix & Phenix Literary Publicists here in Austin, Texas, and we’re celebrating our 15th anniversary this year. We wanted to create a cool project that would bring our love of books and our love of Austin together, so we thought, Why not help Austin make a book?

Here are the basics: Austin Makes a Book is a crowd-funded social experiment. 100 different people. 100 different pages. We’re asking for submissions from Austin residents, and the first 100 people to send something in and contribute $30 toward the cost of the books will be published. You can submit anything: short stories, essays, poetry, artwork, photography, whatever you want (see our submission guidelines for more details). We’ll begin accepting submissions on September 21, so start digging through your old journals, notebooks, garage, closets, studio, or wherever you keep your artistic and/or literary endeavors and find that little gem you’d like to share.

The best part is that we’ll be having a launch party for the book in November – and all the contributors will be invited to pick up their copy and hang out. So keep watching this space for updates, and tell your friends about Austin Makes a Book!
