This one-day workshop covers the basics of mapping and GIS. The workshop progresses through the use and functionality of free, open source GIS tools and programs, explains GIS concepts, and culminates with a finished map product.

Attendees will learn the concepts of datasets, map layers, area measurement, scale, and symbology. These concepts along with the learned knowledge of GIS mapping basics, projections and layers allows the attendee to utilize GIS tools and make maps in the workplace with confidence.

By the end of the workshop, attendees should know the hows and whys of cartography methods. More importantly, how to use FREE GIS software to manipulate data layers and create maps.

GIS Basics: Data and Data Models, Projections and Datums, The Geode and Coordinates
GIS Database: Understanding attribute tables, Labeling and Symbolizing features
GIS Project: Setting Projection, Using Tools and PlugIns, Measuring area and distance on a map
Open Source software: What it does, Where you get it and its advantages
Making a Map: Understanding base maps and how to choose what will be best, selecting and designing layers for your map, using
different views to complete a project, printing a map
