True...some venue operators will screw you on the 10% of the bar (not to mention in a variety of other ways), but it's also true that's it's a fair form of compensation. If the venue doesn't make money, why should you? If the venue can hire any old garage band and have a dozen or so people in the bar for zip, why should you get $400 and only put a dozen or so people in the bar? If you are that good, command a cover charge.
Get over yourself. I don't care how long you've been playing. I don't care who you've played with. How many people will you bring into the venue? That's the determination of your worth.
Ask yourself this: If I hire you at 100% of a $5 cover charge, will you make $150 (30 people)? Or will you cost the venue customers because they aren't willing to pay $5 for a band they've never heard of?
10% of the bar isn't unreasonable. The bar makes money-so do you. If not, neither do you. Stop your egotistical BS whining-or go get some cheese to go along with it.
