Some good points have been made about the biz so far. Let me add a few things but I will preface by stating that I am a professional musician, all I do, making my living for over 20 years and rarely play covers. Played and recorded with some pretty cool names in several genres and toured most of my adult life and I am considered by many to be very good at what I do so I think I can make a few points here.
All of us should be very thankful for what Austin has as far as live music venues. There are not many cities like this with so many clubs willing to let bands perform. The main problem I have seen, over and over again, is musicians and bands, especially "bands", that really should be doing something else with their lives. Take a long hard look at what you are doing. Are you going to be famous and rich? Not likely. Are you going to make a living as a band? Not likely. Are you willing to give up a lot about life such as, nice house, nice car, kids, spouse, etc. so you can do nothing but music until you reach a professional point where you can have these things? And even then I know several music mates who have never had new cars or owned a home. Some fucking good players with names you would know! Some of the top names in the biz don't pay their side men shit so get use to the idea. And I am a band leader who does pay fair and well so I give up a lot. OK, nuff said now.......
So many kids think they are going to "make it" it makes me sick. You really have to dedicate yourself to music and have wanted it like nothing else.
Most bands and wannabe musicians should really just be happy listening to others and get a good job and have a good life and please stay out of the way of those of us who have dedicated our lives to music. It's hard enough without you.
