Sure!

Simply start by placing a CD in the tray, then select the track you wish to "perform". Now here's the tricky part; locate and press the button with a symbol similar to this one: >. Be careful not press the one with symbols << or >> (heaven forbid); these will advance(or recess) the current track and then you'll have done what the virtuosos call "played da wrong track". Lastly(and most important) "lean" back in you chair, puff a blount. Go out and see how the pros do it though careful not to copy-cat "da lean" as this is the single greatest factor of distinguishing one's artistic identity.

Also, there's a great tutorial somewhere on the web entitled: "The Ten Do's and Do Not Do's of the Pause Button" (google for it).

I am a musician and composer living in Austin. I hold a degree in Music Theory from UT and am currently very active in the local scene as a composer, producer, label owner, and manager. I am offering for very cheap my experiences in artist development and knowledge as an arranger, composer, and producer to two local artists who are are willing to go the extra mile with an open ear.

What I can do:

By getting to know each band member personally, I can assess all influences and goals to help bring out each voice in the group. By critically listenting to your music, I will allow every song its broadest potential through the application of professional arrangement, composition, and practice techniques. By attending your shows I can assess what will make your band the one that everyone goes home talking about. But most importantly, I will only render my services in the areas that you request help in.

If you want me to focus on stage presence, then I will focus on stage presence. If you want help coming up with a bridge after the 2nd chorus, I will help you write a bridge. If you want a tight-sounding record, I will help acheive that sound.

As a side note, I work best with acts who are looking to create/develop their own personal sound. I am currently active in two modern/experimental acts of my own and this gig is simply to help fulfill my need to create while also helping with the bills.

I am looking for a piano player/players to sub for me at a standing Thursday through Saturday gig at a large bar and restaurant in N. Austin.

Needed: Professionalism (neat/casual, friendly/polite , flexible, punctual), ability to play 3 - 3.5 hour gig, a varied set list of popular standards and songs (pop, jazz, folk, blues country).

Would be a plus: Some vocals, your own gear (there's a grand piano inside but weather permitting they want the live music outside on the patio so you'd need a portable (digital?) piano/keyboard and, if you do sing, you'd need vocal amplification - the amplification required would need to be clear but not loud).

This is a restaurant/bar gig. They like piano players who can straddle the line between background dinner music and 'entertainment' - not too tame and not too raucous.

I've played at this venue for several years and elsewhere for several decades; I have a vast song list that spans many styles and eras. Your repertiore does not have to be nearly as expansive but should contain enough variety to appeal to adults of all ages (make that most - I don't know too many popular songs from the 21st century that would fly at this gig...).

I am responsible for finding my own replacements at this gig (which is pretty cool, come to think of it) and I have an immediate need to find subs for the last three weeks in June and the 1st week in July. I have a couple of players I use now but need to find one or two more in order to fill every Thur-Sat during that 4-week period. I need a substitute on other dates from time to time so there will be the possibility for additional dates.

Some people we like are Wanda Jackson, Memphis Minnie, Carl Perkins, Howlin' Wolf, Arthur Crudup, Dan Hicks, on and on. Early rock 'n' roll, Western swing where it meets rockabilly. We're not lifestylers, just dig the music and know enough of those jazzy swing chords to be dangerous. We're not locked-in to retro, whatever everybody likes and works for the group is good.

We have rehearsal space in North Austin, livesound / recording knowledge and gear.

You must be good at your instrument, passionate but cool, have good gear and be fully prepared to meet up twice a week for the first couple of months.

Tomorrow, Monday, May 12th, will be the 3rd South Austin Singer-Songwriter Contest sponsored by The Bakehouse, 5404 Manchaca Rd, S. Austin,. Sign up is at 6:00 with perfomances starting at 7:00. Last performance will be approximately 9:45 with results announced by 10:15. Finish time may vary depending on turn out. THIS IS A RAIN OR SHINE EVENT.

We strongly suggest an early sign up. There are only 12 slots available which tend to fill quickly. There is usually an overflow crowd of enthusiastic and appreciative patrons and the level of perfomance is very high. Trust me folks, you really need to bring your A game.

THE "RULES" and FAQ...

The contest is open to anyone but it is not an open mic. It's a contest. There is no need to submit an entry form or to audition. Just come on down.

You will perform 2-3 songs which should be originals. You can include a traditional song or a cover if there is a different take on it, however the idea is originality. Judging will be done by the audience and the winner will be determined by them. Obviously the more folks you can bring to support you the better your chances.

PRIZES! PRIZES! PRIZES!
As determined by you the Austin singer-songwriter community, 1st prize will be a 2 hour Saturday night gig with the winner's name as a South Austin Singer-Songwriter Contest Winner featured in a display ad in the Xellent promoting your gig as well as your name writ large on the marquee out front. Think what you'd pay to buy a display ad to promote yourself in that publication or to put your name on a billboard on one of the busiest streets in Austin. Though there will be no fee for the prize gig, food and drink would be provided and you are of course free to pass the hat and/or sell merchandise. If we can make these events succesful paid gigs will result. There will also be 2nd and 3rd prizes of a gift certificate from The Bakehouse. The inaugural winner was Emily Grayson who played her gig last Saturday to a good size appreciative audience. This weeks winner was Brian Pound who will be perform this coming Saturday, May 17th.

BANDS?
It will be strictly acoustic except for bass or keys, no drums, no CD backing. We are limited to two vocal mics. I suspect most will play solo with perhaps the occasional duo.

REPEAT WINNERS?
We might put a limit on the amount of times you could win if it got silly, but we don't see that happening. There are too many good songwriters in this town.

ORDER OF PLAY?
Running order will be determined by the usual sign-up sheet on a first come basis. You can choose any time slot you want from whatever is avaiable. Early sign up will offer the most options.

VOTING?
Everyone votes for two artists, in no particular order of preference. We will have the vote ONLY after everyone has performed. Ballots submitted before close of play will be discarded. If someone leaves early with their supporters, then they're not there to vote for their artist. I have always found it kind of rude at open mics the way groups will leave immediately after their friend has played and not bother to listen to anyone else. It's also silly as I've found for some reason the best artists are usually on later. We'll have a simple ballot made from the sign up sheet so there can be no arguement on the count.

DATE OF PRIZE GIG?
We will offer a choice of dates two to four weeks in advance. This gives both you and us the time to promote your gig.

WHY DON'T YOU OFFER MONEY?
We can't afford it. We are making an investment in advertising, the PA, extra staff, etc. on top of our normal operating expenses. There is no guarantee we will ever see a return but we're willing to put up the cash and take a chance. There is no other open mic or jam session in Austin that we know of that offers any reward from the venue whatsoever.

I think that covers it. We may well change things as we go along if we find there is something that is not working or if someone has a better suggestion. For example, we changed the voting procedure during first contest right then and there to take on a suggestion made by an audience member.

And finally, though I really hate that I feel I have to say this, please don't bother with any smart ass comments or moaning about exploitation. We're actually trying to do something positive here. And yes we want to increase business. And yes we want to make money. But unlike most we are providing something in return. We are providing a place, the equipment, and the resources for you to be heard and the chance to get something immediately tangible for your efforts. Hopefully we will attract a better caliber of artist and there will also be the intangibles of inspiration, motivation, and just a damn good time.

Guitarist needed for a trio project south of Austin. We play only weekends. I am a drummer/singer with PA and gigs. I have a string of very good Bass Players. Gigs currently pay a minimum of 62.50 plus tips per night for 4 sets. However, there is very good opportunity to make much more with a little patience and the right guitarist. The show is designed to play Classic Rock/Country/Blues and a few originals. Tunes include La Grange, Honky Tonk Woman, Silver Wings, Stormy Monday, Gimme 3 Steps, Wooly Bully, and other bar room standards. We are really interested in a guitar player who can step in and play this kind of stuff with a minimum of rehearsing. Vocals helpful. Rehearsals are rare but in San Marcos which is about 20 or so miles south of Austin. Gigs for now are in Canyon Lake, Seguin, and North SA. car broken into all articles stolen [clothes etc} including phones, and custom guitar...been trying to survive on the streets but not so well ....even hosp. with heat stroke, and car is now towed...have all the paper work to prove it . TX Country band (with song in the teens on the TX charts this week) needs a drummer for long-term commitment. Great opportunity for the right drummer! Country & Red Dirt experience a must -- as well as a love for this style of music. Vocal harmonies a big plus, but not required. Immediate gigs, so you'll need to be a fast learner. Need great timekeeping and the ability to groove quietly as well as to rock it out. Must be willing to make this project your top priority.

What we can offer: Steady paid gigs initially, with opportunity to become full band member if you're the right fit. Currently we're booking 9 to 12 shows per month -- but the booking is increasing and the gigs are getting better as the single climbs. We've already got region-wide distribution for our new album, a great radio promotor, and a new booking agent. Good, hardworking, dedicated musicians. Well-equipped PA and transportation. We've got three albums of strong originals and enough covers for any situation (about 80 songs on the call list).

Here's the deal-killer for most drummers: this gig will NOT work for mercenary drummers. Yes, it's a paid gig, and we are growing fast, but you will NOT be able to support yourself on this gig initially unless you live with your mom or have a trust fund. So please don't call if you need to put other gigs first. It's understandable, but it won't work with our schedule. At the same time, this gig can also be difficult for dayjobbers unless you have a flexible schedule. We travel often on Thursdays and Fridays.

Ironically I dig the Plant Rockers and they are very much in the same vien of Rock n Roll. All of Eddie Angels bands actually, except I do get bored with the straightjacket stuff, unless it's the spanish rock n roll they do with Robert Williams.

I do not wish to play any pertinacious "rockabilly" "cowpunk" or "psycho", but I do dig the rock n roll especially if you dont look the part. I do love rockabilly but I won't do a neo thing or any other somethin-billy type stuff.
The desperate lifestyle and dresscode is not me, but I been doin' this fer years, kinda quit and have been feeln' the itch lately. Creams and lotions arent working but maybe rockin' out will.

i have experience in touring, pro tool-ing, session work, producing, film scoring, reason + midi controller, etc. i also play and sing lead in 2 projects right now, but am looking to whore myself out a little more ;)...this might be my last year of pursuing music full-time - if no progress is made. the ideal project will hopefully not demand monogamy. i am also an intermediate bassist (i play bass in all my demos...see below for sound sample links), but use a pick and do not currently have an amp.

Country Rock/Blues Jam Band needs deadicated Keys & Drums - No hired guns. We will rehearse, we will gig and we will get paid to do it.

Think Dead, Mule, Little Feat, Allmans, and other music that fits into that style. If it's good and tight with the rhythm, bass and drums all locked in, the keys will add depth and flavor while the lead floats in and out of the rhythm line. Three part harmonies - or more. We will do some 145 straight blues but the emphasis is to weave through songs and hit the note.

You must want to play this style of music, play for the song and be open to the wanderings of the groove. If you don't like the Dead please look elsewhere as that is the sound we have already achieved in rehearsals and the sound we are looking for in other participants.

Prefer if you can sing backing and or some lead.

If you are in 2 bands already we will not be your third one and we want to be your #1. Prefer someone who wants to work with seasoned musicians who are serious about this project.

Usual crap about equipment, transportation, ego, booze, drugs and drama is inserted here.

We will be rehearsing this Thursday afternoon out in the Oak Hill area.

Just moved to the area from Portland OR. I've been playing trumpet since age 9 - almost 18 years. I have perfect pitch. I know a lot of rock and roll and jazz; can read music; can play anything by ear in any key; etc. Experienced in freestyle soloing over chord changes.
