Intelligent rock project seeks great bassist (South Austin)

So our old group can be found at www.myspace.com/satelliteheights ; We (the guitarist and keyboardist) are starting a new group. We wrote pretty much all the music for our old group. We're assembling a new band (to write new music with), and we're gonna need a talented bassist. We want someone who has serious chops, but still knows how to lay back and just fuckin' hold it down when the music calls for it We'd also like someone who knows how to LISTEN. Anyway, our goal is to create fresh new music using interesting chord extensions, cool synths/pads, while still having a driving, tight rhythm section and while retaining the arrangement/structure ideals of great pop acts(KOL, MJ, Daft Punk, RHCP, and many others). We think having a wide variety of influences is important and cool. We will put melody at the fore-front. You must be down with the idea that great music takes a lot of revision to craft into something great. You have to be able to not take criticism personally, and just realize it's all about the music. We want to go all out with this. The two of us are professional musicians, as in, we make all of our money playing/writing/teaching music. We have pro gear and don't flake out. My name is Mike June and I am a singer/songwriter/guitarist here in Austin as a transplant from New Jersey. I've been here for about a year and a half now and staring to form a band. I already have a guitarist and a drummer, and we are looking for a bassist who can hold the pocket together and make things go. If you asked for a description of our sound, we dont really have one yet, but I do have two records out that I put out with my old band from Jersey. I guess it would be best described as Dylany-Springsteenish country rock, but its basically rootsy rock and roll that takes cues from all styles of american music. I have been writing a bunch of songs and I'm looking to get somewhat of a musical fresh start here and I'm looking for the band to combine really great songwriters' songwriting with fun, rootsy rock music. We are building piece by piece, but I envision having guitars, bass, drums, keys/organ/accordian, fiddle and lots of background vocals, especially a female voice. The more the merrier I say, and can even envision horns as well. Anyway, if that interests you, you can listen to some stuff on Myspace. Most of the songs are just demoes of some of the new songs I recorded onto a tape recorder with some friends. The other few tracks are from my previous records. We are a band consisting of a guitarist/vocalist, drummer and bass player, looking for another bud to join the group. We are late 40's guys; work hi tech jobs, parents, not into 420, no religious orientation, looking for guitar player/vocals to play with us. We use backing tracks to practice individually on stuff, then practice as a group about 2 x a month at my home in Circle C Ranch, SW Austin. We sometimes work in pairs to work out stuff as well. Prefer someone in the areas so that you show up without a long drive to get in your way.

Our goal is to get an interesting set together and keep improving our skills while having fun. We have a list of songs we are working on that include Cream, Nirvana, Deep Purple, Audio Slave. We are looking to add more 21 century alternative rock to the mix and are open to any new ideas. Prefer hard rock orientation; no folk, country, trance, drone, techno-glitz, or tribute.

You don�t need to be a super shredder, or do any leads at all if you don�t want to, but are an intermediate player who can work out songs from the backing tracks, tabs and do some singing along the way in key and on beat. You don�t need to have super gear, just what it takes to do the job. You must be willing to do some singing, whether backup or lead. This means you need to show up with a mic, stand and a 10-20� chord to plug into our sound system. We have a rack mixed sound system, a place to play on Sunday afternoons, and some beer to look forward to. You just need your ax, effects pedal and mentioned vocal gear. No amp hauling required!

I know this is a bit prescriptive, but it really is a no pressure situation for the right fit, no gigs planned at the present, no church affiliation, no $ to be made. Orchestral Strings Wanted (North Austin)

The Austin Philharmonic Orchestra, a community ensemble, is in need of players for its fall season. String players are needed for all sections. The Philharmonic also needs a Bass Trombone.

Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Lanier High School on Payton Gin Road. The band room is on the east side of the school, just behind the performing arts center. The Philharmonic rehearses from September to June, and had six public performances last season. The first concert this season will be on Wednesday, December 9.

Current repertoire includes Beethoven Symphony No. 6 "Pastoral," A Somerset Rhapsody by Holst, and the Dvorak Slavonic Dances. Recent repertoire has included Beethoven Symphony No. 1, the Vivaldi Guitar Concerto and the Brahms Academic Festival Overture and Symphony No. 2. Ok, I got a number of promising responses to my first ad, but some flaked, some weren't quite the right fit, and the one gal who seemed like a perfect match decided she didn't have enough time after work, school and her cover band. So please don't respond unless you are certain that you have the time to rehearse at least twice a week and that you are ready to front what will soon be an active rock 'n' roll band looking to make big waves in 2010.

I'm a Gen-X guitarist who is no longer counting on being a rock star, but is not ready to give up yet either. I just want to put together a great band, see if we can become a force in Austin, and if so, then we'll seek to expand our reach from there. But it has to start with just enjoying making music together because we share a similar vision and music is our religion. My vision is a classic rock foundation with an alt-rock edge and some psychedelic jam influence, maybe a little bluesy Americana, and whatever else we might be moved to throw into the mix. A diverse sound with no boundaries. Too many bands pigeonhole themselves into one thing and that gets boring to me. We can be socially conscious and rage against the machine, but we can also be irreverent and just have fun. Maybe Pearl Jam & Smashing Pumpkins meet Phish, Widespread Panic & the Black Crowes, then jam out with Jefferson Airplane & the Band of Gypsys, and kick it with Alanis Morissette/Amy Lee/Pat Benatar/Sheryl Crow/Stevie Nicks/Grace Potter/Jenny Lewis/Susan Tedeschi/Tori Amos/Aimee Mann, etc... Most alt-rock bands don't know how to jam and most jambands lack memorable songs. I think a band that could merge these realms while fronted by a dynamic female vocalist would have a wide-ranging appeal and be a blast to play in.

I had a briefly promising such band going a few years ago in San Francisco until the singer/keyboardist quit when she decided she wanted to do pure electronica instead of rock, doh! I've been looking for a replacement ever since. I've got some old demos on a Myspace page you can hear, and hopefully you do too. I have a handful of great tunes that are ready to go, and another handful that could use some new lyrics and arrangements. Maybe you do too? But the bulk of the repertoire will be brand new songs that we'll write together. Let's do this thing...

Into your art? Read no further.

I want to find some people, whether in dead earnest or with tongue in cheek, to help me form a cover group focusing on Abba and Elvis Costello. Why?

A) It's a cute name.
B) Chicks love Abba.
C) I love Elvis Costello and don't mind Abba at all.
D) In a weekly house gig somewhere, this would probably build a following, largely because B above.

We could play anything that doesn't clash too much with the central pop sensibility here, being careful to emphasize female vox. I want to focus on music girls like. They can go potty during Lipstick Vogue and Shabby Doll. I figure maybe ten each of Abba and Costello, and then ten assorted and ever-changing feel good pop tunes, again, with emphasis on female lead vox. I think of songs like Band of Gold (actually a pretty sick lyric) and A Little More Love.

I'm 45. I played solo acoustic and in a serious original band for fifteen years back when I was badass. I wrote songs, sang and played guitar. I hung it up, got married, went to law school, and grew up. It sucks almost as much as I had feared. Now I'm divorced and it's hell meeting girls. Women. Ladies. And I've had this idea for a cover band for a while. And I've been playing and thinking about music alot more. I want to do this, but Austin is not my musical hometown, and I need to meet some strangers to kick this into gear.

Think about whether you would have fun playing Dancing Queen, Waterloo, Oliver's Army and What's So Funny? If that sounds like fun, get in touch. I figure to play rythym guitar and sing some. I can sing harmonies and can emulate Costello pretty well but wouldn't mind sharing male vox duties at all. I've also got a comical Michael McDonald and a colorable Donald Fagen imitation, in case of outbreaks of Doobies or Dan. Maybe you've got a good Ric Ocasek or Tom Petty.

What we'll need:
2 chick singers, maybe with instrument chops, definitely with harmony chops. Would be sweet to have a pretty blond and a sultry brunette, or maybe just some wigs.
1 piano/keyboard player maybe w/ vox
1 bass player maybe w/ vox
A serious guitar player who doesn't want to sing
1 drummer (maybe already covered)
Swedish Flag
At least one of the above should be a dude who can sing
Everyone should have their own gear, and be competent to comp an unrehearsed song in case of emergency Toto or Poco. Or Gogos. Some schmuck willing to pay fifty bucks for Walk Like an Egyptian is going to get his song whether we know it or not.

I'm not prejudiced, but I'd expect this to appeal more to old timers around my age. Youngsters looking for fun shouldn't be shy about contacting me. I know young girls still like Abba, and might make fine singers. At any age, you'd need to be able to let go of your serious artistic integrity for long enough to have fun playing catchy pop.

This is probably a six or seven piece band. For formation we can learn our parts from records, and cobble together a PA from old pie tins and sealing wax to rehearse. Any live playing would involve house or pro PA. Shouldn't take more than a month or two after setting the roster to get 2 hours together, three forty-minute sets. I know this would work for a party band, and we'd find shows to play, ideally a weekly house gig with house PA.

And to put your mind at rest, no costumes. I might get a Bjorn wig.

We're looking for:

- Vocalist: for background vocals and harmony, with occasional lead vocals.

We are an all originals band, that is big on personal creativity and open opinions.
Our music varies in genre, we range from Folk to Hard Rock, and some Abstract.
You must be financially stable (we don�t have money to loan, not even just til Friday), have your own transportation, and are able to commit to practicing and performing ( if we book a show, we know you�re going to be there).

We practice every Saturday in Liberty Hill, and sometimes we'll have an extra practice during the week.

Looking for a pro level percussionist that will stay in pocket while still bringing an entertaining show. We are due in studio in January, the tunes are written and approved for our sophomore effort. We are well established and in high demand...but are hindered by recent drummer reliability issues. The band is home based in College Station but will travel to Austin to practice (we quite frequent the musiclabs) and will be booked for a full 150+ show schedule in 2010. We already frequent several big market areas and are well received. Frontman is a full-time musician and decorated songwriter. Hey,

I'm a 23-year-old guitarist/singer/songwriter guy. I just moved here recently, and I'm trying to get involved in a couple of musical things. I'm less interested in making money, more interested in performing. That being said, I like money, as I am human, and am by no means not interested in making it. I'm just realistic, and would rather play for nothing than not play at all. I'm basically looking for a female or male vocalist/songwriter/maybe guitarist or bassist or keyboardist who wants to get together, write some songs, learn some covers, and play a few shows. I'm kind of into keeping it low-key, maybe hitting up some open mics together, and hopefully getting some possibly paying gigs at a few cafe/loungy/restaurant kinds of places. One of my friends works at nice little wine bar kind of place, and offered to have me play there, but I would feel more comfortable if I had a companion to harmonize and perform with (plus I think it would sound much better to them wine-drinking folk). Please, don't contact me if you haven't cared enough to listen to the songs in the link above. (I have gotten some insanely random emails from CL trawlers looking to make a buck with any gig at all, and it's frustrating to be contacted by people who clearly don't give a shit who they're dealing with. I will not respond to you if you're a fly-by-night DJ with a sweet set of turntables and a collection of Hip Hop to rival even the most eclectic club owner, for example.)

The style is pretty clear for each song, and that's really what I'm aiming at with this collaboration (and it is going to be a collaborative effort, even though the band isn't starting from scratch). I welcome creative input with these songs. They are personal, sure, but that doesn't mean they're immovable. Contrarily, they are very open to interpretation from a bassist, keyboardist, drummer, whatnot. They are simply to serve as a skeletal structure on which to form some solid muscle.

That's where you might come in.

If you're interested in working together, please contact me through this CL ad. I'm really not looking for professional musicians, as this isn't a paying gig at the moment. But for the shows that are booked in the near future (really, as soon as we've got a good set nailed down), all profits will be split completely equally. If you think of yourself as an easy-going, personable individual with enough motivation to make a pretty regularly-gigging band a reality, you're what I'm looking for. Despite what I said in the first sentence at the top, age really isn't a deal-breaker. But it's pretty important that you're familiar with the more modern music movements.

If you play bass, guitar, keyboards, or drums- go ahead and reach out. Not looking for lead vocals, but if you can sing harmonies well, that's a huge plus.

If you've read this far, and are still interested, here's a brief back story:

I moved to Austin about a year ago for a few reasons. Living for a few years in NYC made me pretty tense; I needed a nice, easy change of pace. Austin also sounded like a great place to be as a musician. I loathed the cut-throat aspect of the NYC scene, and just wanted to be around other artists who were looking to play for fun. I had a band up in New York, and we were doing well for ourselves, but once I moved down here I just didn't have the energy or time to immediately strike up another effort. After a year grinding the ax at other creative pursuits, I'm ready to play in a band again.

This isn't necessarily a call to arms; I'm just sending a probe out into the wild blue and hoping somebody on the same page pings back.

I am a very well trained guitar teacher, looking for someone to take over my S. Austin students when I move to Cedar Park permanently. I tend to focus on simple music people can play, enough applicable theory, and teaching the students how to play with others. Must be clean, professional, fun, and know their stuff!
