Are you seeking an opportunity to make a difference in the life of a Travis County Youth? If so, the Travis County Youth Advocate Program is looking for you. We are currently recruiting volunteer Mentors to work with our referred youth from the Travis County Juvenile Probation Department.
Read the information below and if it sounds interesting and you would like to learn more, send an email to:
austinmentors@yapinc.org
What are Mentoring Services?:
The mentor is a trusted guide, coach and friend who assists and encourages youth to fulfill goals they have set for education, vocation, and a drug/alcohol free life style. Mentors will make a connection with a youth and use that connection to convey these messages: the youth is a valuable human being and that the mentor will offer by words and actions ways to increase the likelihood of youth achieving their goals.
Volunteer mentors will provide at least 6 hours per month of mentoring services of referred youth. Mentoring services will include but need not be limited to the following:
„« Serve as a role model
„« Provide support, encouragement, and positive feedback and perspectives
„« Serve as a confidant and resource when personal, job, and educational problems occur.
„« Recommend methods for youth to problem-solve, develop specific job related skills, present effective behavior and how to function in a work environment
„« Serve as a guide and source of information regarding careers, career development techniques and career planning
„« Establish a trust relationship between a caring, responsible adult and a referred youth
„« Influence through trust
„« Advise youth regarding appropriate behavior including role modeling
„« Help the youth to develop a positive perspective
„« Homework assistance and tutoring
What are the Mentor Qualifications?:
„« Age 21 or older, current need for male mentors
„« Willing to attend training specially designed to give the mentor information about the youth being served, the do‘¦s and don‘¦ts of mentoring, the laws
regarding the mentor/youth relationship, program purpose, basic adolescent development, and helping youth obtain outline goals and objectives (6-8 hours).
„« Consent to a comprehensive background check that includes criminal, driving and sex offender history.
„« Obtain and keep current automobile liability insurance in the amount of 100/300 (YAP will off-set the cost for this increase if necessary, more on that when you contact us)

Feel free to contact Tiffany Herms, Erika Bitar, or AnaLisa Reyes with any questions at 512-407-6752.
