Compaņeros en Lectura brings volunteers into Spanish-bilingual classrooms once a week for 45 minutes to help 2nd graders become stronger and more successful readers. Our program follows a volunteer model where:
- the entire class participates at the same time
- the teacher is in the classroom during the session for support
- 3 to 4 children reading on the same level are paired with the same volunteer every week
- structured materials are used by the children and volunteers
- all communication and materials are in Spanish
Structured materials guide volunteers and students through 3 types of activities:
- fluency practice
- word study
- comprehension
