Care Calls is a telephone reassurance program that matches homebound elderly and disabled Meals on Wheels clients with volunteers to have enriching conversations over the phone a few times a week. The aim of this program is to foster friendship and, in doing so, to alleviate some of the isolation and loneliness that many homebound people experience.
Care Calls enables volunteers to spend quality one-on-one time with clients. It allows individuals to develop relationships with one another in an organic way, and relate to one another on a more personal level. After a time, many volunteers start visiting their matches in person. The sky’s the limit when it comes to forming a great relationship with your match.
This program is flexible, as all you need is a phone and fifteen minutes. Also, calls can be made anywhere- it’s is an ideal way for volunteers to give of their time and talents at home, during regular breaks at work, while taking a walk or even while out of town. Phone friend calls are made two to three times each week at a time decided on by the volunteer and client. Daily calls are brief, and are placed Monday through Friday to check on the client’s well being.
