Partners in Reading brings volunteers into the classroom once a week for 45 minutes to help 2nd graders become stronger and more successful readers. Our program follows a volunteer model where:
• the entire class participates with a volunteer at the same time
• the teacher is in the classroom during the session for support
• 3 to 4 children reading at the same level are paired with the same volunteer every week
• a structured curriculum is used by the volunteers and students
• volunteers act as cheerleaders for their students' success!
Every week, volunteers and students work on reading, comprehension, and fluency.
Our program operates in approximately 16 Title I elementary schools throughout Austin.
Volunteer opportunities are available at:
Barrington Elementary [(N)1-35 & Rundberg] - Wednesdays
Odom Elementary [(SC)S. 1st & Stassney] - Wednesdays
Widen Elementary [(SE)E. Stassney & Nukols Crossing] - Wednesdays
Requirements:
Interested volunteers should register at www.austinpartners.org for the opportunity they prefer. Once a Safe Schools background check is approved, the volunteer will be contacted about training. We look forward to your help in the classroom!
