Research shows that mentoring keeps students engaged in the learning process and increases the likelihood of graduation. Having an adult take an interest in a child is a primary reason for a student to stay in school. As a mentor and role model, you can inspire a child to develop new interests and career possibilities. Mentors also learn about the issues facing young people today and develop a potentially lifelong friendship. There are no special skills required to mentor a student. Mentors are special individuals who want to spend quality time with students in their community. Mentors are good listeners, caring friends and trusted adults.
Commitment:
Meet with one student once a week for 30-60 minutes at a pre-arranged time on the school site for the remainder of the school year. English and bi-lingual speakers are needed.
Before you begin volunteering in AISD schools, you must register online (www.austinpartners.org) for a Safe Schools background check. Training is provided before working with a student.
