Volunteering in Mexico! Protecting the Marine Turtles at Colola

Protecting the Marine Turtles at Colola

  December 16, 2009 - January 1, 2010
January 6 - January 22, 2010
January 27 - February 12, 2010

The program for protecting the Marine Turtles is run since 1996 together with the Michoacan University and the local people of Colola Beach. This year again the international volunteers will work with the people of Colola village to protect the sea turtles. There are two kinds of turtles that arrive on the beach, the Negra (Black Turtle) and the Golfina (Olive Riddle Turtle). The people involved in the project help by collecting eggs, burying them in the turtle camp, taking care of the baby turtles and doing some work collecting statistical information.
In this frame, a group of international volunteers will be involved in the project as members of the staff, which means that the volunteers will be very involved in the project and the work.
The goal of this project is to protect the turtles and to help run the conservation activities of the turtle protection program, promoting international cooperation and solidarity.
The main work consists in collecting turtle eggs, burying them again in a secure place, and transporting the baby turtles safely to the sea. This will be carried out at night since the turtles do not get out of the ocean during the day (because of their natural predators, it is safer for the turtles go out of the ocean in the dark). Together with the people from Colola Village, the volunteers will seek for the turtles and take care of the eggs and the baby turtles. Local people, who are very friendly, work with the group and explain them what to do.
Very motivated volunteers who really want to get involved in the work for protection of the turtles are needed for this project.
There are also some extra activities to be done with the local people in order to help improve the town such as setting names to the streets of the town or helping to arrange a multi-use playground for the children, and maybe some cleaning work, but this depends on the volunteers' initiative. The people of the town are very open to participate in other activities that the group of volunteers can propose, so any ideas will be welcome.
Language: The official language of the project is English. Some Spanish would be appreciated.
Location: Colola is a small town located on the Michoacan State coast, between Maruata and La Placita towns. It's a remote place that offers an excellent opportunity to be close to nature, on a virgin beach, with no tourism around. The closest city is Tecoman at 200 kilometers, but other villages such as La Placita that are closer (45 minutes by bus) can offer Internet connection.

For more details, please visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-mexico.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US); 604-628-7400 (Canada)

This project is part of CADIP's International Volunteer Program: www.cadip.org/workcamps.htm

General rules and conditions for participation on our workcamp projects: www.cadip.org

On behalf of the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon and our 26 benefiting local charities, we'd like to ask for your help to make the 2010 Austin Marathon a great community event!

The Austin Marathon would not be the same without its enthusiastic, supportive volunteers encouraging participants and helping staff the various event roles.
The Austin Marathon will be held on the morning of Sunday, February 14, 2010 in downtown Austin, Texas. In addition to race day volunteer shifts, we have opportunities available at the Marathon Expo on Friday (2/12) and Saturday (2/13).

  December 7 - December 27, 2009
February 1 - February 21, 2010

Ayurveda is a 5000 years old Indian health care system that is widely practiced even today. "Ayur" in Sanskrit means "life" and "Veda" means "science". It is a perfect Science of health and longevity. This holistic science is the knowledge of complete balance of the body, mind and spirit, including the emotions and psychology, on all levels. It includes in its consideration, longevity, rejuvenation and self-realization therapies through herbs, diet, exercise, yoga, massage, aromas, tantras, mantras, and meditation. According to Ayurvedic tradition, health is the balance of elements air, earth, fire, and water, and illness is an excess or deficiency of any particular element. Ayurveda treats illness at its source, rather than at the level of symptoms, and helps an individual to take responsibility for their own health and well being. Ayurveda is also known as 'Ashtanga Veda' (the word literally means 'Eight branches of knowledge') as it is divided into eight specialized branches.
Yoga is a complete science of life that originated in India several thousands of years ago. It is the oldest system of personal development in the world, encompassing the entire body, mind and spirit. It is the union between a person's own consciousness and the universal consciousness. The classical techniques of Yoga date back more than 5,000 years. The word Yoga means "to join or yoke together," and it brings the body and mind together into one harmonious experience.

International volunteers will be learning the Basics of Yoga and Ayurveda in these three weeks of the project. Every day, there will be topics covered by a professional master (the person in charge of yoga and ayurveda classes), which will be practiced by the volunteers. Yoga will be practiced every day.
Apart from this, the volunteers will also help at the herbal garden and the nearby school.
Greetings, Hi, Ne-how, Shalom, How are you, How you doing, whats up, yasoo, previet, saloom-ah-lechum, konichee-wa,
Bonjour, Jamboo, and all other languages of greetings......

I am a being in a male body, that had been disabled the past 20 years from severe depression, sugar addiction, and electro-magnetic sensitivity( so bad i have had to sleep in a van to get away from electric wires )......
My " biological " family has all but abandoned me, so i am reaching out to my "planetary family" . I will gladly accept extra-terrestial family as well.
Beam me up Scotty.
Yes, i do keep my sense of humor, sometimes.

I am "asking" the UNIVERSE to provide me with a strong, caring, supportive, intelligent individual who can mentour me, encourage me, and contribute financially to getting my life back.
I have quite a story , many have told me to write a book. I only want your support, not pity.
I am strong, but crippled by some emotional things/depression/ shame/ severe sugar addiction, and 7 years of homelessness
( having to live out of a van, cause i couldn't sleep in homes due
to proximity of electric wires that most people never felt. They made me shake so bad, i couldn't sleep )
PLease e-mail me back here, and be strong, cause i will be a project that will take a few years to repair.
I know that when i recover , i will assist someone else in the future.
Thank you for reading this, and taking your time to communicate to me.

Salem Orphanage Home
Salem Orphanage Home was founded in 1992. It is based in Kisumu which is the third largest city in Kenya. Kisumu has a population of approximately 300,000 and is located on Lake Victoria almost on the Ugandan border. In Kisumu, there are many orphans who, without help, would have no future. Salem Orphanage is a home to about 130 orphans who lost their parents (usually to AIDS) and street children from the slums. There are primarily boys, due to the "preference" for girls as household labor help, and the difficulty for boys to stay at home if their mother marries someone other than their father. At Salem they are loved and cared for well, but the need is still so great.

Volunteer work: Volunteers' major duties include:
- Responsible for day-to-day coordination of the Home to ensure efficient performance of the organization operation
- Cooking for the children, washing the children's clothes and counseling
- Teaching the children sports, drama and theatre
- Farming and making "jikos" (cooking pots)
The volunteers will be working from Monday to Saturday. The number of hours will be decided by the Home management.
Special requirements: The Orphanage requires volunteers with counseling and teaching skills; preferably teachers in Math, English or Science and teachers for early childhood education and nursery schooling. However, we have an open policy and applicants with other ideas to share are also welcome to apply and will be considered.
Volunteers need to contribute/initiate ideas and by that would be promoting the growth of the Orphanage. This is an opportunity for the volunteers to work at a community/grassroot level in capacity building and training in self-sustainability.
Language: English
Duration of the project: The program will run for a minimum of 1 month and a maximum of 6 months. The program is running throughout the year.
Orientation: Orientation meeting will take place in Nairobi before proceeding to the project.

Age range: 19 and over

For more details and enrollment, please visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-kenya.htm

For volunteer opportunities in other countries: www.cadip.org,
  617-502-0400

   604-628-7400

The pagoda is now a place of charity for unlucky children and also helps treat diseases. Now, the pagoda is taking care and bringing up more than 200 children in the South of Vietnam. The children here have unfortunate backgrounds as many have been abandoned by their parents and relatives. The head monk sometimes receives phone calls from hospitals requesting him to take in abandoned babies. At the moment, about 200 children are living in the Pagoda, their ages ranging from 5 days old to 40 years old. 90 of these are orphans that are suffering from cerebral-palsy, blindness or Down's syndrome.
Samcheok is a city of tourism with beautiful beaches and a cave. But the standard of living is poor and especially, education facilities are not enough for the local community. The host organization is a local church and they run local children's center to provide educational and cultural opportunities to children. They offer not only studying with books but also various extracurricular activities to them. Musical team and Korean traditional music performance team, which are particular offering of this center, perform a road show for local people. The host wants to give the kids an intercultural experience through the volunteers' participation. You can also feel the typical warmth and kindness of rural Korean community.

Volunteer work: Together with Korean volunteer(s), the international participants will organize and manage cultural and education programs such as foreign languages (mainly English), outdoor activities, etc. for the children who attend the local Children's Center. The children at the center are mainly elementary school students and few middle school students. They normally stay at the center after school, from 2 pm until around 8 pm.
Any kind of activities and ideas are welcome, as long as they provide the local children with opportunities for cultural exchange. The local children are very open and interested about the different countries in the world.

Do you want to make a difference in a child's life? Do you have at least 1 hour of spare time during the week?
Research shows that mentoring keeps students engaged in the learning process and increases their likelihood of graduation. A primary reason for a child to stay in school is having an adult take interest in their life.

As a mentor and role model, you can inspire a child to develop new interests and career possibilities. Mentors have the great opportunity to learn about the issues facing young people today and potentially develop a lifelong friendship.

There are no special skills required to mentor a student. Mentors are special individuals who want to spend quality time with students in their community. Mentors are good listeners, caring friends and trusted adults.
Commitment:
Meet with one student once a week for 30-60 minutes at a pre-arranged time on the school site for the remainder of the school year. English and bi-lingual speakers are needed.

Before you begin volunteering at AISD schools, you must register on line at www.austinpartners.org for a Safe Schools background check. Training is provided before working with a student. After your background check is approved, we will contact you to register for a training session.

Non-denominational, quiet group meditation in service to humanity... so easy that children 12 and over can do it.
Requires no special classes or training. All you need is a desire to help the human family and a commitment to sit quietly in meditation
for an hour or more once or twice a week. It is the most potent form of meditation available today, is totally self paced and always free of charge.
Small East Austin group meets on Wednesdays at 7pm & Sundays at 2pm at a private residence (doors open half an hour early).

Transmission Meditation is both a world service (Karma yoga) and the
most potent technique of personal development (Laya yoga) available
today. This meditation is a virtual 'hot house' for the spiritual
growth of those who participate on a consistent basis. It provides a
vehicle for service affecting the entire evolution of humanity for the
better.

It is a group service activity which 'steps down' the great spiritual
energies that continually stream into our planet. This transmission
process, which makes the energies more useful to humanity, is similar
to that of electrical transformers, which step down the power between
generators and ordinary household outlets. These transformed spiritual
energies are gradually lifting all life forms, changing our world for
the better.

Presently two men are meeting twice a week for this. We've been going at this location for a year now.
We welcome to anyone who wants to join us in this endeavor.

How do we do it? We sit in regular chairs or on a couch - and start off by saying the Great Invocation aloud together. Then we sit
quietly for about an hour - working at keeping our attention on our ajna centers (the chakra behind the eyes), while we are doing that - potent cosmic
energies are directed by members of the Esoteric Hierarchy of Masters to/through our chakras and out into the world wherever they can do the most
good for humanity.

Read all about it here: http://www.TransmissionMeditation.org
Although it remains among the most traditional areas of the country, it is also the poorest and less developed part in terms of infrastructure or industry; creating a huge rural exodus and migration from the Isan inhabitants to Bangkok. The Khueang Nai District administration wants to dynamize the Deng Mor rural areas and stimulate English learning through the international volunteers' presence. The main target group of the project will be young people and children. Inside this larger framework, each project will address the specific target group in different villages in the Deng Mor area.
Cultural exchange is the main work of the project. The volunteers will discover the typical Isan culture and traditions, visiting villagers, farmers and local artisans, helping them in their tasks. The volunteers will also hold English teaching workshops for the children of several district villages. The exact nature of the work will depend of the needs of the village at the time of the project.
Study theme: The volunteers will learn about the culture of rural Thailand in general and the traditions and specificity of the Isan region. Thai language lessons will also be given to the volunteers.
Special requirements: A correct level of English language and the will to teach it to kids is obviously necessary. The volunteers need also to be motivated to discover Thai culture and to present the one of their country of origin.
Leisure time: Leisure time will be organised by the volunteers with the support of the group leader. The closest city is far but accessible. The region isn't very tourist attractive as such but the nature is of extraordinary beauty: rice fields, small temples and natural parks are all over the region.
New years Eve, according to the Thai Buddhist calendar takes place in April. The volunteers in the April group will have the great chance to attend the ceremonies and festivities in the village with the local population.
Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted in a traditional Isan house in the community and have access to the same basic conditions as any villager.
Location: The Deng Mor sub-district area is about 20 km far from Khueang Nai city and 60 km north west of Ubon Ratchatani city, in the Isan region, North east of Thailand.
Age range: 18 and over

For more details visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-thailand.htm

For volunteer opportunities in other countries go to: www.cadip.orgor give us a call:
  617-502-0400

     604-628-7400

Are you an adult cancer survivor?

Would you be willing to take about 20-30 minutes to complete a survey about your experiences?

As a graduate student, I am conducting research on the development of psychological growth in cancer survivors. If you would be so kind to consider completing my questionnaire, you will need to meet the following criteria:
1. You must have been diagnosed with cancer (any type) at the age of 18 or later
2. You must currently be in remission without having had any prior relapses
3. You must have undergone and completed treatment for your cancer within the past ten years (i.e., surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, bone marrow or stem cell transplantation, biological therapy, hormone therapy, and/or immunotherapy).
4. You must not have any current clinical psychiatric diagnosis and must not have any other serious health problems.

If you are interested in completing my questionnaire or would like more information, please contact: Steven.Schmidt@uconn.edu.

Help Save Vinyl with the Audio Preservation Fund (Austin, TX)

Volunteering opportunities are right around the corner with the Audio Preservation Fund, an Austin-based non-profit working hard to save endangered recordings and preserve them in public archives. We partner with libraries and archives such as the Library of Congress to preserve copies of analog recordings.

We've acquired a few record collections that are in need of documentation. We need your help!

We have been working very hard on the design of our new website. It should be launched in the next week. One part of the website offers our partners and website visitors the chance to view the contents of the collections we acquire. I have processed a couple of the smaller collections myself, but there are still more than 2,000 LPs, 45s and 78s that need to be processed!

We will be holding volunteering sessions every Tuesday and Wednesday night for the rest of December. I know that with your help we can get through our current collections by then! The sessions will start at 6pm and run for an hour or two. We'll have some food and refreshments, and of course thousands of records to listen to while we work.

To document the collections, we will be entering information into spreadsheets, which I will then tranform into searchable data on the website. Please bring a laptop if you have one. If you have Miscrosoft Excel installed that is great. If you don't, you can get the free, open-source OpenOffice at

http://www.openoffice.org

It contains a spreadsheet application that we can use as well. If you don't have a computer, but are interested in volunteering, please come anyway because we can pair you up with someone that does have one!

Our first meeting will be this coming Tuesday, December 8th at 6pm. Our current office is located at

3103-A Grooms St
Austin, TX 78705

If you are interested in attending this meeting or any following meetings, please email us at audiopreservationfund@gmail.com or give me a call at (512) 731-9616.

Thanks, and see you soon!
This year the hurricane Jimena has lashed the city of Guaymas leaving an important level of rain. 2009 is the year when it rained the most (in the last 50 years) and this caused an important damage to the population of Guaymas and to the city. The hurricane affected people of all backgrounds, leaving a lot of people in the middle of nowhere since they lost everything they had. Everything was affected, public buildings, leisure areas, houses, schools, there was no place that was not affected.
This international volunteer project is organized in order to help in the reconstruction of the city of Guaymas with the support of motivated volunteers. There are many things to be done since there were several areas seriously affected. We need help to clean beaches, to rebuild sportive spaces, to clean up parks and community spaces, to fix roads, to help in rural communities by giving health workshops.
After the hurricane, the children affected don’t have a place to continue their studies, they lost everything they had for their education: material, furniture, the roof collapsed and the walls were damaged because of the water and humidity. For that reason, at this first stage, the goal of the project is renovating and reconstructing two schools damaged by the Jimena Hurricane, so the children affected can return to their educative activities as soon as possible and in a clean and healthy environment, appropriate for their development and with the support of the international volunteers. This project will benefit 25 families for the first school and 180 families for the second school.
Volunteers will help with the reconstruction of the two schools affected. They will help with reconstruction activities such as painting walls, reforestation, and cleaning the schools. They will contribute to renovate these structures through scratching and painting walls, and will also do some artistic work such as painting murals on the walls of the schools with the help of local volunteers with landscapes and thematic appropriate for the children. The volunteers will also help planting trees and reforesting the affected area, making and putting signals and signs.
Age range: 18 and over

For more details visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-mexico.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US); 604-628-7400 (Canada)

For volunteer opportunities in other countries click here: www.cadip.org

The Western Ghats is India's prime zone for bio-diversity, known for its number of animal and plant species in this region. A Marine Turtle protection project has been started here in co-operation with the Forest Department of the State of Karnataka. Over a 60-kilometer stretch of beach, surveys are conducted and the turtle nests are protected until the hatching of the eggs. In 2007, more than 1500 baby turtles reached the ocean safely thanks to the efforts of international volunteers. This year again we continue these efforts. The projects will also focus on spreading awareness to the general public and in the schools about the importance of turtles in the bio-diversity.

Austin Pets Alive! goes to the TLAC animal shelter every night and pulls cats and kittens off of the Euthanasia list the night before they are scheduled to die. All of them live in foster homes until they are adopted, but without more homes, we can't save more lives! We need the community's help to save these wonderful pets.

Fostering involves keeping the cat or kittens inside and providing food, water, litter and lots of love until they are adopted. We have adoption events all over the city where you can bring them to get adopted. We pay for all medical care and also test them for FeLV/FIV, spay/neuter, vaccinate , treat for fleas/worms, and microchip them before adoption.

If you can open your home to a cat or kitten facing euthanasia, please got to our website and fill out a foster application. One of our volunteers will get back to you within 48 hours. http://creator.zoho.com/austinpetsalive/forms/#Form:Foster_Application

Donations that we receive will go to help patients receive treatment as well as assisting in spreading the word about choices in cancer therapy. Carolers will receive complimentary hot cocoa, holiday snacks, and plenty of gift bag goodies from participating restaurants and sponsors. This is strictly a volunteer event to contribute to cancer care for patients around the world.
Our targeted cancer therapy of choice is IPTLD and our goal is to provide the information and tools people battling cancer need to live life on their own terms.
