Picasso's original "La Danse"or"Three Dancers" in oil on canvas, dated 1925, brought to a close a series of memorials to his many departed artist friends whose loss raised for the deeply superstitious Picasso the spector of his own death and an expression of his struggle to overcome death through the magical power of his art. Said struggle is made visible in the heavily reworked and violently distorted female dancer at the left joined together with the other ballet dancers in a fatal never-ending round. This work is usually thought to begin Picasso's Surrealist Period.
