Lot of 3 Original WWI Posters, America's Food Pledge & Program for Public Eating

For sale is one lot of five authentic, original World War One posters reflecting food rationing and conservation.

There are two styles:

  • Two of the three posters pronounce: "America's food pledge, 20 million tons" and state "We have promised to feed the hungry millions of Europe-the Allies and liberated nations. Save food, two-thirds more than last year from stocks no larger." They are signed "United States Food Administration."
  • The other shows the food regulations that were hung in "Kitchens and Working Departments" defining the "War Program for Public Eating Places" during the Great War. These are marked, "Notice to All Employee." These posters includes a quote from future president Herbert Hoover, who was at the time head of the U.S. Food Administration, referring to "those fighting in Germany" and stating that sufficient food supplies for the American Army will be obtained "by the economy of the people." As such they spell out the general plan and general orders of how food may be served. For instance, they specify that "Victory Breads" must contain at least 20% flour substitutes. Fourth meals during a day are called "unpatriotic." And sugar bowls are banned.

These are amazing pieces of history that would look great in a kitchen, restaurant or dining room. Frame sizes are all 24" x 36". Mat openings vary. I would recommend rematting.

Produced by The Carey Printing Company, New York. Year of publication: 1917/1918.

Overall condition is good, particularly considering that these items are 100 years old. All are mounted and framed under unbeveled, tan mats. I have not disassembled the frame and matting to inspect it under the mat. The pages were folded before mounting (likely when they were made) and some of the folds are visible. Several show creases and some very small tears. Due to eBay limitations I am only able to post 12 photos. I will be happy to provide additional photos of any or all items upon request. I have attempted to describe each individual poster below:

B) War Program for Public Eating Places Poster: Condition is good. The upper left corner shows some damage and appears to have been damaged before it was mounted. There is an inverted v-shaped scratch in the plastic in that area. There is a small defect in the upper right and lower left of the poster.

C) America's Food Pledge Poster: Condition is good. There is a small pencil mark, approximately 1" long in the upper left corner. Minor foxing near top. It also show several creases.

D) America's Food Pledge Poster: Condition is good. The poster shows several creases, some of which are likely from the time of production. There is a small tear at the bottom center which shows a tape mark from an old repair. There is also a small tear near the top, approximately one inch long in the shape of a shallow inverted V; the other, just below it, is approximately 3 inches long.
