Up for sale is a 1958 Nash Metropolitan. It's a late model, with the "high compression" engine and a trunk lid (believe it or not the earlier models had a trunk but no lid). I've done the following:
- Rebuilt the fuel pump
- Cleaned and rebuilt the carburetor
- Replaced spark plugs
- Replaced radiator drain valve (it was so rusted it fell apart from me breathing on it)
- Fixed the heater blower fan
- Adjusted the brakes
- Adjusted the steering box to take out the miles of steering wheel play it had
- Replaced a cracked driver's side window
- Replaced some missing trim on the doors and front medallion
It starts, runs, and drives very well. My wife and I enjoyed taking the car out on the weekends and running errands, getting coffee, or just cruising around. We honestly planned to keep it a lot longer, but we'll (at some point) be moving to a neighborhood that exits onto a highway. If you don't know, this little city car makes 50hp (at the crank) and doesn't really like going much above 55mph (it'll do it, but the engine is really spinning at that speed). The car is great for driving around the city/suburbs, not great for going 70mph...
All the major systems work. Engine runs well, brakes work well, and almost all the electrical works (radio, heater, lights, horn). There are a couple of things that could use some work:
- There are small rust bubbles forming on the roof. I tried to take a good picture of it.
- The trim piece on the front passenger fender is bent (check the images).
- Some of the panel gaps aren't great (look at the bottom of the doors).
- Wiper blades could use replacing.
- The gas gauge doesn't work. The gauge twitches when the key is turned so it's getting power, but it always reads empty.
- The turn signal flasher module is worn out. It works, but is slow to blink, and the more electrical load there is, the worse it gets. At idle with the headlights turned on, it won't blink at all. A new (modern) flasher would fix this.
- The tires are older. You can still ride on them, but I'd look at replacing them at some point.
Car come with lots of receipts from previous owners (and I've added my own), owners and shop manuals, and a spin-on oil filter conversion. Asking $10,500, but definitely open to offers. No trades please, since we're planning on moving. Can even drive it to you if needed, as long as it's around the Austin area (remember, not a highway car).
