Westat is currently seeking motivated individuals with a commitment to excellence for the ongoing National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The core of NHANES involves in-person household interviews and medical examinations conducted in a mobile examination center (MEC). The MEC phlebotomist is part of a large team that travels throughout the U.S. The Phlebotomist conducts the phlebotomy examination, which includes administering a questionnaire to screen for conditions that exclude the study participant from the blood draw, determining fasting status, and performing blood draws on participants of all ages including newborns. They conduct inventories, sets-up and pack-up the phlebotomy room, including packing, unpacking, and storing light equipment and supplies, and perform other duties as assigned.

Candidates must :

  • Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent;
  • Be certified by one of the professional certification organizations such as ASCP, NPA, or ASPT;
  • Have at least one year of experience as a phlebotomist in a direct patient care health area or laboratory;
  • Have phlebotomy experience on all ages including newborns;
  • Be CPR certified or have the ability to obtain CPR certification within the first 3 months of employment;
  • Be available to work 40 hours per week during daytime, evening, and weekend hours;
  • Be willing to comply with all training requirements;
  • Be willing to commit to work for at least 1 year;
  • Be willing to travel nationally for project work;
  • Be capable of lifting 35 lbs., as well as packing, unpacking, moving, and storing equipment and supplies, with or without reasonable accommodations;
  • Have a valid (current) driver’s license that is not under suspension; and
  • Have the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • FULL-TIME CONTINUOUS TRAVEL IS REQUIRED with a 1-year minimum commitment (two vacation breaks per year).

    This is a full-time nonexempt position and is eligible for overtime pay and benefits. Mandatory paid training will be held. Pay rates are based on experience.

    While on active travel status in the field, this position will include: paid lodging, per diem ranging from $55-76 per day, paid individual room, a company car and insurance, or a car allowance of $475 monthly.

    Benefits of this position include two annual paid vacations (lasting 8 – 10 days each). Eligibility to participate in Westat’s ESOP, 401(k) and group benefits and paid holidays (Labor Day, Memorial Day and Thanksgiving occur during work weeks; Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and the Fourth of July occur during vacation breaks).
