Overview: The Zinc Plating Operator I performs localized zinc plating repairs on steel components in accordance with engineering drawings, customer specifications, and Athena quality standards. This position is responsible for preparing, plating, inspecting, finishing, and documenting work while ensuring products meet all workmanship requirements. Employees in this role are expected to perform assigned tasks independently while contributing to a safe, efficient, and continuous improvement-focused manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities: (include but not limited to): Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, include and are not limited to the following:
• Perform visual inspections of steel products to verify plating requirements and workmanship.
• Complete localized zinc plating repairs following approved work instructions and engineering requirements.
• Perform cleaning, preparation, plating, rinsing, neutralizing, and post-plating processes.
• Operate pneumatic grinders, polishers, and finishing tools to blend plated areas to specification.
• Verify plating coverage, finish quality, and appearance meet customer and Athena standards.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, work instructions, and plating specifications.
• Identify and report nonconforming material or process concerns.
• Complete production documentation accurately.
• Perform routine equipment cleaning and basic preventative maintenance.
• Maintain work area using 5S and Lean Manufacturing principles.
• Assist with training Zinc Plating Technician Trainees as requested.
• Support departmental continuous improvement initiatives.
• Maintain compliance with all safety, environmental, and quality procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Minimum Preferred Qualifications, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, include and are not limited to the following:
Education
• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
Experience
• Successful completion of Athena Zinc Plating Technician Trainee program or equivalent manufacturing experience.
• Experience operating pneumatic hand tools preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Working knowledge of localized zinc plating processes.
• Ability to read and follow engineering drawings and written procedures.
• Ability to identify plating defects and quality issues.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Basic computer proficiency.
• Good organizational and communication skills.
• Ability to prioritize work while maintaining quality standards.
• Commitment to workplace safety and continuous improvement.
Physical Requirements: Essential physical requirements pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, include and are not limited to the following:
• Ability to stand and walk for 8+ hours per shift.
• Frequent bending, reaching, twisting, and repetitive arm movements.
• Extended circular and linear arm movements for up to 6+ hours per day.
• Regular lifting of materials up to 50 pounds.
Preferred Tools and Technology:
• Ability to safely operate pneumatic grinders, polishers, and other finishing equipment.
• Ability to wear required PPE including chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, and respirators when required.
• Manufacturing environment with exposure to industrial chemicals, metal dust, noise, vibration, and moving equipment.
• Work performed around plating solutions and finishing equipment.
Required clothing and PPE: Attire should not interfere with job performance or safety.
• Safety glasses are provided by Athena
• Closed toe safety shoes are required
