Hey! Scan Hopper is seeking a new band member to complete our lineup. This is a project going back to 2009 that started out as a solo thing before expanding to various lineups over the years. Key influences include Eno/Roxy Music, Wire, 70s Bowie, Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd, Beatles' "White Album", "Sebadoh III", Ween, Buzzcocks, and many others...so if that sounds like it's up your alley, read on! The fourth Scan Hopper release COVISSA NOVA came out in Sept '23, and the album includes "Ultrachorus" which was KUTX's Song of the Day in November '23. https://kutx.org/song-of-the-day/scan-hopper-ultrachorus/
Currently the lineup is me (singer/guitarist), another guitarist, a bassist/backup singer and a drummer. We are 3 dudes and 1 lady, ranging in age from mid 20s to late 40s. We were cooking early last year, playing some really fun shows at Guero's (SXSW), Far Out Lounge, Vaquero Taquero (downtown), Vinyl Beauty Bar, Coral Snake...but after some lineup changes we took a break, found some new members, and we're about to get back on stage soon (9/17) as a 4-piece for now.
We are looking for a cool lady who can sing backup and some occasional leads...who is at least comfortable with playing keys, though incredible chops are not required...and can add some some extra percussion (tambourine/shakers/etc) at times.
Why are we looking for another lady to join the band? Simply because the female voice has been crucial to our sound from the beginning. You can hear it across this Soundcloud sampler, but check out "The Island Years" (ending), "Hologram(s)". "Ultrachorus" and "Making Love to the Universe (Part 2)" for some key examples and to see if your singing style fits in! https://soundcloud.com/user-361926691/sets/scan-hopper-sampler
At first we'll get you caught up on some older songs for gigs in the near future, but we're also planning to work on some new stuff soon. If you are a songwriter and your songs fit with our thing...we're totally open to that! While I am the bandleader and have written/composed pretty much everything that Scan Hopper has ever done, I don't insist on being the only songwriter in the band. In fact, more collaboration going forward would be awesome!
If you're looking for PAID GIGS only...that may be tough. We'll play pretty much any decent club that books us, and any money we get can be put into the band fund or split evenly. But as you may know, it's hard to make much money playing clubs in Austin. It's all about creative joy and playing live...any money we get for it is just a nice bonus. But if you've ever played around town...you probably know the drill.
PRACTICE LOCATION: We currently have a small practice room at the bassist's house in the North Loop area. But if you've got a (bigger) space at your place and want us to come to YOU, we'd be open to that too! Whatever the case, tryouts will likely take place at SPACE rehearsals.
If you have any audio or video recordings of your singing or playing, that would be great to check out...but it's not certainly not required.
A bunch of music videos and Spotify/Bandcamp links can be found @ scanhopper.com
Thanks for reading & listening...if you got this far and it seems like something you could get into, we hope to hear from you! Also, you can come check us out on 9/17 (free early show) if you'd like to see us play live.
